The GOP presidential candidates faced off last night in a national security debate. Here are the winners and losers:
BIG WINNER: Newt Gingrich:?He had strong answers on Iran and the Patriot Act ? and managed a strong defense of his position on illegal immigration.
On Amnesty, he provided an answer that appeals to moderates, and invoked Reagan to temper any qualms that the Tea Party and others may have. It will be an issue with some of the base, but it’s a way for Gingrich to pick up some of Romney’s moderate supporters.
Winner: Jon Huntsman: He had his best debate to date. He landed a big blow to Mitt Romney on Afghanistan, showing how much damage he can do if he is taken seriously in these debates.
Even:?Mitt Romney: Yet again, he didn’t seal the deal. He had a rough time on the immigration question ? going to the right of Gingrich, but trying to avoid his scenario of grandmothers being separated from their grandchildren. He also had trouble with Afghanistan, allowing Huntsman to fluster him. While by no means fatal, tonight was one big missed opportunity.
Even:?Michele Bachmann: She schooled Rick Perry on Pakistan, but didn’t do nearly enough to change the trajectory of her campaign.
Even: Rick Perry: Expectations were absurdly low after his “oops” moment, and he managed to avoid another major gaffe. That said, out of nowhere he called on Leon Panetta to resign as Secretary of Defense. His Pakistan answer needed a lot more work.
Loser: Herman Cain: He missed an opportunity to bounce back from his Libya gaffe, but had a strong answer on immigration and the threat of terrorists on the Mexican border. But on Iran, he seemed unprepared yet again, repeating that the country is in a “very mountainous region,” and saying that is why a military strike on the country’s nukes would not work.
Loser: Ron Paul: He brought up Timothy McVeigh, but seemed to forget that he killed 168 Americans, and he also confused al-Shabab and al-Qaeda. He had some strong answers that will appeal to libertarians ? but he only lessened his appeal to everyone else.
Loser:?Rick Santorum:?He called Africa a country. Enough said.?

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann is telling college students in politically important Iowa that all Americans should pay taxes since they all benefit from services such as roads and bridges, national defense and the courts.
Her position, which she was outlining Thursday at Iowa State University in Ames, is a direct challenge to rivals Rick Perry and Herman Cain, who are advocating plans that would allow low-wage earners to continue paying no taxes while implementing a form of a flat tax on all other workers.
The Tax Policy Center estimates that some 46 percent of households this year will not pay federal income taxes.
Bachmann, a congresswoman from Minnesota, was set to talk about the economy as polls show her trailing behind other contenders in Iowa, which holds the first presidential caucuses in January next year.
She made a big splash when she got in the race this summer and won an early test vote in Ames in August. But her standing slipped as the GOP electorate rallied around Perry and then Cain. Now, she’s hoping Iowans give her a second look as Perry looks to overcome a month of stumbles and as Cain tries to weather the fallout from recently disclosed allegations that he was accused of sexual harassment in the 1990s when he was head of the National Restaurant Association.
With jobs and the economy as the top issues on voters’ minds, Bachmann hopes her tough talk will help her regain her footing in a state that her advisers see as a linchpin in their strategy.
In an outline of her speech released late Wednesday, she criticizes the current federal tax code as too complicated and corporate tax rates as unreasonably high. She criticizes a tax code that allows larger businesses to take advantages of loopholes to avoid paying their fair share. And she talks about her background as a former federal tax attorney.

With Michele Bachmann on the defensive over her suggestion that the HPV vaccine can cause mental retardation, it’s former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum who continues to flog the issue tonight.
In a statement to reporters, Santorum communications director Hogan Gidley took a jab at Rick Perry for saying his proposed HPV vaccine mandate should have been structured as an opt-in, rather than an opt-out program.

Like Bachmann, Santorum has the kind of ironclad social-conservative credentials that make the HPV vaccine mandate an easy target for him in this campaign.
He’s gone after Perry on the issue in both GOP primary debates; in tonight’s statement, Santorum’s campaign takes the issue further and tries to raise larger questions about the frontrunner’s ideological authenticity.
